Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a powerful all-in-one business management platform designed to automate and optimize all areas of your business. It comes with out-of-the-box reporting features that should make it easy for technical and non-technical users to quickly access accurate data and create and customize reports and dashboards. But it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Like all other ERPs, Business Central is really good at gathering data—not at transforming it into valuable reports and insights. It does include all the functionality and tools required to help you manage your data, evaluate performance, and make real-time strategic decisions, but you almost always need experienced technical resources to help get you there. And let’s face it, most companies don’t have those resources on staff.

If you are a Business Central customer, you have likely encountered some of the more common reporting and analytics limitations, like:

  • Reporting Formatting
Business Central includes a handful of pre-defined Excel reports for analyzing financial statements (which offer little to no customizations) and Account Schedules, which are rigid, structured reports. To change report formats, you need an experienced developer.
  • Spreadsheet Accuracy
Although Business Central connects data and processes across your organization, most companies still rely heavily on uncontrolled spreadsheets. This disconnects you from the details behind the numbers and opens the door to calculation errors and accuracy issues.

To make the most of your Business Central data, reporting needs to be something that every member of your team can do on their own. Unfortunately, these limitations force businesses to rely heavily on external technical developers and consultants for the most basic of reporting and analytics. In our upcoming webinar, Next Level Business Central Reporting, we are going to discuss these limitations in more detail and share some advice on how to improve your reporting processes in 2022.
